…Let down your hair!

… “Oh really… and what are the problems with Rapunzel?”

“It is not possible to climb a tower by somebody’s hair, without breaking their neck, no matter how long it has grown.”

“Then it must be symbolic.”

“If the tower has no door or stairs how did Rapunzel get up there in the first place?”

“Why, then it must be symbolic.”

“There is no location given for the tower, we know only that it has thorns at its base.”

“Oh, then it is definitely symbolic.”

“Symbolic of what?”

“And why does Gothel go to visit Rapunzel on a daily basis?”

“And why does she need to incarcerate her in the tower anyway?”

“Ah, we are told that. It is because Rapunzel is the most beautiful maiden in all the land.”

“Why should beauty alone be sufficient reason for incarceration?”

“Like I said, there are numerous problems with Rapunzel.”

    1. Indeed, and possibly even in Fairy Tale Land too. In this story though we are not given a personal psychological motivation for this act. In Snow White for example we have the ‘fairest of them all device’ so the Wicked Queen has a, to her, valid reason to be envious and hence antagonistic towards Snow White… Here we are left to assume a reason or invent one. This suggest a lacuna, and hence a late, rather haphazardly constructed tale. There may be earlier versions of the story which still contain the reason or reasoning.

  1. Yes there are so many symbolic references here , why did the witch not just fly up to the room that Rapunzel was in! …. why did the prince not fetch a ladder! … If the hair was long and strong enough did Rapunzel not think of cutting it off and using it as a ladder herself?
